Overview
What it is
Two terms families hear constantly are accommodations and modifications — and the difference matters. In short: an accommodation changes how a student learns or shows what they know (same goal), while a modification changes what a student is expected to learn (a different goal or content). Both can appear in an IEP; 504 Plans generally provide accommodations.
How It Works
How it works
- AccommodationsChange the method or conditions — the student still works toward the same grade-level goal. Examples: extended time, text-to-speech, a quiet room, a calculator, or oral responses.
- ModificationsChange what the student is learning or is expected to master — a different (often reduced or alternate) goal or content. Examples: shorter or alternate assignments, fewer/simpler test items, or grading against individualized goals.
- Why it mattersAccommodations keep the student on grade-level standards; modifications change the expectation — which can affect diploma paths, so teams weigh them carefully.
