What it is
Gifted students show advanced ability or potential — in academics, creativity, or specific talents. Twice-exceptional (2e) students are gifted and have a learning difference (like dyslexia, ADHD, or autism). 2e learners are often misunderstood: their strengths can mask their challenges, and their challenges can mask their gifts — so they need support for both sides at once.
Signs & characteristics
- Gifted signsAdvanced reasoning, deep interests, rapid learning, or exceptional creativity
- 2e signsA striking gap between high ability and unexpected struggles
- Uneven profileExcelling in some areas while struggling in others
- Frustration or boredomUnderchallenged in strengths, unsupported in challenges
- Often overlooked2e students may not be identified as gifted or as needing support
Evaluation & testing
Identification uses ability (cognitive) and achievement testing — often the same psychoeducational tools (WISC, Woodcock-Johnson) used in special-education evaluations. For 2e learners, a thorough evaluation looks at both the gifts and the learning difference, since one can hide the other. Gifted screening (CogAT, NNAT, OLSAT) may also be part of school identification.
