Funding

How Hawaii funds schools

Hawaii is the only statewide single school district in the country, fully state-funded, and distributes money to individual schools through the Weighted Student Formula: a base amount plus per-pupil funding weighted up for students who are economically disadvantaged, English learners, gifted or transient (special education is funded separately). The weights are reviewed periodically by the Committee on Weights, most recently for 2026–27 and 2027–28.

District-level per-pupil spending and the local/state/federal revenue split for Hawaii Department of Education are published in the federal school-finance files — see the full-data links below for the current figures.
