What it is
The i-Ready Diagnostic (from Curriculum Associates) is a computer-adaptive reading and math assessment used by many schools in grades K–12, typically 2–3 times a year. What's distinctive: i-Ready pairs the diagnostic with personalized online lessons — so it's both an assessment and a learning tool. It's not pass/fail and not a state test.
Format & structure
i-Ready is computer-adaptive — it adjusts to each student to pinpoint their level in Reading and Math. After the diagnostic, students often work through tailored online lessons targeting their gaps. It's untimed and taken on a computer or tablet.
How it's scored
i-Ready reports a scale score and a placement level (e.g., on grade level, one grade below, etc.) for each domain, plus growth over time. Like MAP, it's not a percent-correct or pass/fail — placement describes where a student is performing instructionally so teachers can target support.
Registration & cost
Schools administer i-Ready as part of their program (families don't register). Note one exception: unlike some interim tests, the official i-Ready Diagnostic can also be accessed by families through authorized providers outside school. Ask your child's teacher for the results and placement.
Test dates & timing
Most schools test 2–3 times a year (fall/winter/spring) to place students and measure growth. Your school sets the windows.
