The Basics

What your state tests

Maine uses the Maine Educational Assessment (MEA) — a through-year model (checkpoints across the year) for ELA and math in grades 3–8, a science test, and the SAT in grade 11. Run by the Maine Department of Education. There's no exit-exam gate.

The Assessments

Which tests, which grades

Format

Format & subjects

The MEA is online; the grade-11 SAT follows the national digital SAT format.

Graduation

Is passing required to graduate?

No exit-exam gate. Maine doesn't require passing a state test to graduate; districts set course and credit requirements. The grade-11 SAT provides a college-usable score.

Scoring

How it's scored

MEA reports achievement levels; the grade-11 SAT is scored 400–1600.

When

Testing windows

The through-year MEA has checkpoint windows across the year; the grade-11 SAT is given in spring. Confirm with your district.

Prepare

How to prepare

Participation

Participation & opting out

Students in tested grades participate. Ask your district about make-up windows and any questions.

Access

Accommodations & multilingual learners

Accommodations follow a student's IEP or 504 plan; eligible students take the state's alternate assessment. Multilingual learners take an English proficiency test (WIDA ACCESS or the state equivalent) and may receive designated supports.

How Scores Are Used

Accountability & promotion

Results feed Maine's accountability and school reporting, guide instruction, and — via the grade-11 SAT — give students a college-usable score.
