Funding

How West Virginia funds schools

West Virginia funds its county school systems through the Public School Support Program, a foundation program that computes each county’s basic need largely from allowances for professional educators and service personnel earned per net enrollment (set as position ratios by county density group), plus transportation, operations and administrative allowances. A required local share from the regular property levy is deducted and the state funds the remainder. All 55 districts are county-based — one district per county.

District-level per-pupil spending and the local/state/federal revenue split for Mineral County Schools are published in the federal school-finance files — see the full-data links below for the current figures.

Accountability

Report card & state results

West Virginia reports accountability through the WV Balanced Scorecard, housed in the ZoomWV data portal, rating each school and district on achievement, growth, English-learner progress, attendance, graduation and postsecondary readiness. Look up Mineral County Schools on ZoomWV.

Accreditation

Accreditation status

West Virginia accredits its own public school systems through the state Board of Education under Policy 2320 (a performance-based accreditation system), rather than a private accreditor. See the West Virginia Department of Education for a county system’s accreditation status.
