Funding

How Michigan funds schools

Under Proposal A (1994), Michigan funds districts through a per-pupil Foundation Allowance combining state aid and local non-homestead property tax; the 2025–26 target allowance is $10,050 per pupil. On the weighted side, At-Risk (Section 31a) funding now uses an annual “opportunity index” that scores each district by its share of economically disadvantaged students, with the 2025–26 appropriation at $1.3 billion.

District-level per-pupil spending and the local/state/federal revenue split for Northwest Education Services are published in the federal school-finance files — see the full-data links below for the current figures.

Accountability

Report card & state results

Michigan reports accountability through MI School Data, hosting the federally required MI School Index (0–100 across ESSA components such as proficiency, growth, graduation, English-learner progress and chronic absenteeism) and a Parent Dashboard. Accreditation

Michigan has no state accreditation requirement; the Michigan Department of Education directs districts to Cognia, the de facto K-12 accreditor used across the state. Look up Northwest Education Services in the free Cognia registry.
