Education in Slovakia
Slovakia, an EU country in Central Europe, runs a state-centered education system with Slovak as the main language of instruction and near-universal literacy. Its universities are Bologna-aligned and EU-recognized, and Slovakia offers English-taught programs, including in medicine, that attract international students.
Structure & stages
The system is organized as:
- Primary (základná škola, 9 years)A single-structure school (a 4-year first stage and a 5-year second stage), ages ~6–15

Compulsory education & enrolment
Education is compulsory to age 16. Public education is free, and the school year runs September to June. A compulsory pre-primary year precedes primary school.
Public schools
Most students attend free public schools, following a national curriculum. Slovakia offers general (gymnasium) and vocational secondary pathways, with minority-language schooling for communities such as Hungarians.
Private & international schools
Slovakia has a private and international-school sector, concentrated in Bratislava and Košice.

The curriculum covers Slovak language and literature, mathematics, the sciences, history, and foreign languages (English is widely taught).
Exams & qualifications
Students take the Maturita (school-leaving examination) at the end of the gymnasium — the basis for university admission (faculties may add their own entrance requirements).
Higher education
Higher education is led by Comenius University in Bratislava (the largest and oldest), along with the Slovak University of Technology and universities in Košice and elsewhere. The system is Bologna-aligned, and several universities offer English-taught medical programs.
