Education in Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone, a West African nation and former British colony, runs an English-language education system (Krio is the lingua franca, with Mende, Temne, and other languages spoken). After the devastation of civil war (1991–2002) and the Ebola epidemic, the government launched a major Free Quality School Education program in 2018, boosting enrollment. Literacy remains low, and the country is home to one of Africa's oldest universities.
Structure & stages
The system follows a 6-3-3 structure:
- Primary (6 years)Ending with the NPSE
- Junior Secondary School (JSS, 3 years)Ending with the BECE
- Senior Secondary School (SSS, 3 years)Ending with the WASSCE
Compulsory education & enrolment
Basic education is the focus of compulsory schooling, and the 2018 Free Quality Education policy made public primary and secondary schooling free, driving a large enrollment increase. The school year runs roughly September to July.
Public schools
Most children attend government and government-assisted schools, with instruction in English (and local languages in early grades). The Free Quality Education program expanded access substantially, bringing challenges around classrooms, teachers, and resources.
Private & international schools
Sierra Leone has a private and mission (church) school sector, concentrated in Freetown and larger towns.
Curriculum & language of instruction
The curriculum covers English, mathematics, sciences, and social studies, taught in English, geared toward the national examinations.
Exams & qualifications
Three national examinations mark the path: the NPSE (National Primary School Examination), the BECE (Basic Education Certificate Examination), and the WASSCE (West African Senior School Certificate Examination, administered regionally by WAEC) — the basis for university entry.
Higher education
Higher education is anchored by Fourah Bay College (founded 1827, part of the University of Sierra Leone) — the oldest university in West Africa, once known as the "Athens of West Africa" — along with Njala University and other institutions.
Studying in Sierra Leone from abroad
Sierra Leone is not a major destination for international students; capacity is modest, though its system is English-medium and Fourah Bay is historic.
