Education in Senegal
Senegal, a stable West African democracy and former French colony, runs a French-language education system on the French model, with Wolof and other national languages widely spoken. Alongside the state system, Quranic schools (daaras) educate many children. Literacy is relatively low, and the government has worked to expand access and integrate national languages and religious education.
Structure & stages
The system follows a French-derived model:
- Primary (6 years)École primaire, ending with the CFEE
- Lower secondary (4 years)Collège, ending with the BFEM
- Upper secondary (3 years)Lycée, ending with the Baccalauréat
Compulsory education & enrolment
Primary education is compulsory and intended to be free, beginning around age 6. The school year runs roughly October to July. Completion and quality vary, and many children also attend Quranic schools.
Public schools
Most children attend public schools, with instruction in French (and growing use of national languages in early grades), alongside a strong tradition of Quranic education.
Private & international schools
Senegal has a private and religious school sector (including Catholic and Franco-Arab schools), concentrated in Dakar and larger towns.
Curriculum & language of instruction
Instruction is in French, with growing use of national languages, covering the standard academic subjects and, in many schools, Islamic or Franco-Arab education.
Exams & qualifications
Three national exams mark the path: the CFEE (end of primary), the BFEM (Brevet, end of lower secondary), and the Baccalauréat (end of lycée) — the gateway to university.
Higher education
Higher education centers on Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) in Dakar (the largest and most prominent, a major Francophone West African institution), along with Gaston Berger University in Saint-Louis and newer regional universities. Many students also study in France.
Studying in Senegal from abroad
Senegal, through UCAD, is a Francophone regional education hub, though not a major destination outside that region.

Special education & support
Special-education provision is limited, delivered mainly through NGO and faith-based programs.
Homeschooling
Homeschooling is not an established route; education is school-based, alongside Quranic schooling.
Costs & funding
Public primary education is, in principle, free, though families bear indirect costs. Private and religious schools charge fees. The currency is the West African CFA franc (XOF).
