Education in Russia
Russia runs a large, centralized education system with Russian as the language of instruction (regional languages are also used in the republics) and near-universal literacy. It inherited a strong Soviet tradition in mathematics and the sciences — reflected in consistently high performance at international science olympiads — and today its defining features are the standardized Unified State Exam (EGE) for university admission and a mix of free (state-funded) and fee-paying university places.
Structure & stages
General education follows a 4-5-2 structure:
- Primary (grades 1–4)Ages ~7–11
- Basic general (grades 5–9)Completing the compulsory cycle
- Upper secondary (grades 10–11)Often with a "profile" specialization (natural sciences, humanities, technology), leading to university — or students may enter vocational education after grade 9
Compulsory education & enrolment
Education is compulsory for grades 1–9 (basic general education). Public education is free, and the school year runs roughly September (starting on "Knowledge Day," 1 September) to May. After grade 9, students continue to upper secondary or enter a vocational college (kolledzh) or technical school (tekhnikum).
Public schools
Most students attend free state schools, which follow a national curriculum set by the Ministry of Education. Specialized schools — gymnasiums, lyceums, and profile schools — offer more advanced or focused programs, concentrated in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and other large cities.
Private & international schools
Russia has a small private and international-school sector, concentrated in the major cities and popular with internationally mobile families.
Curriculum & language of instruction
The curriculum covers Russian language and literature, mathematics, the sciences, history, social studies, and foreign languages, with a strong emphasis on mathematics and the sciences. Upper-secondary students often follow a profile track aligned to their intended university field.
Exams & qualifications
Two centralized exams anchor the path:
- OGEThe Basic State Exam at the end of grade 9
- EGEThe Unified State Exam at the end of grade 11 — a standardized national exam (compulsory in Russian and mathematics, plus optional subjects) that serves as both the school-leaving exam and the primary basis for university admission. Introduced to make admissions more transparent, it is scored on a 100-point scale
Higher education
Russia's higher education is led by Moscow State University (MSU) (founded 1755, the most prestigious), Saint Petersburg State University, the Bauman Moscow State Technical University, and the Higher School of Economics, among many others. State-funded ("budget") places are awarded to the highest EGE scorers, with remaining places offered on a fee-paying basis. Russia also retains the distinctive Specialist degree alongside Bachelor's and Master's programs.
Studying in Russia from abroad
Russia hosts international students, particularly from the CIS, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East:
- FieldsMedicine, engineering, and the sciences are popular, and some programs are taught in English (especially medicine)
- ScholarshipsThe Russian government offers scholarships (quota places) to international students
- PracticalitiesInternational students obtain a student visa; given the current geopolitical situation and the Bologna exit, verify degree recognition, payments, and travel conditions carefully
Special education & support
Russia provides special education through specialized schools and growing integration in mainstream settings, within a centralized system.
Homeschooling
Home/family education is legally permitted in Russia; families notify the authorities, and children take the required state attestations (including the OGE and EGE) to certify their education.
Costs & funding
Public general education is free. University students may hold state-funded (budget) places based on EGE results or pay tuition; fees vary by institution and program. The currency is the Russian Ruble (RUB).
