Education in Paraguay
Paraguay is genuinely bilingual: both Spanish and Guaraní are official languages, and — unusually for an indigenous language — Guaraní is spoken by the majority of the population. This shapes a distinctive bilingual education system. Literacy is relatively high, and the country has worked to expand access and strengthen its Spanish–Guaraní bilingual model.

The system is organized as:

Compulsory education & enrolment
Basic education (nine years) is free and compulsory, beginning around age 6. The school year runs roughly February to November.
Public schools
Most students attend free public schools, which apply the country's bilingual (Spanish–Guaraní) education model. Access and quality vary between urban and rural areas.
Private & international schools
Paraguay has a private and religious school sector, concentrated in Asunción and larger towns.
Curriculum & language of instruction
The curriculum covers Spanish, Guaraní, mathematics, the sciences, and social studies, with bilingual instruction a defining feature — Paraguay is one of the few countries to formally teach and use an indigenous language alongside Spanish across the system.
