Education in Lithuania
Lithuania, an EU and Baltic state, runs a state-centered education system with Lithuanian as the language of instruction and near-universal literacy. It is home to one of the oldest universities in the region, its universities are EU-recognized, and — notably — it offers English-taught programs, including in medicine, that attract international students.
Structure & stages
The system is organized as:
- Primary (grades 1–4)Ages ~6/7–10
- Basic (grades 5–10)Completing the compulsory cycle
- Secondary (grades 11–12)General (gymnasium) or vocational, leading to the Matura
Compulsory education & enrolment
Education is compulsory to age 16 (through basic education). Public education is free, and the school year runs September to June. Pre-school participation is high.
Public schools
Most students attend free public schools. Lithuania has strong foundations in mathematics and the sciences and offers general (gymnasium) and vocational secondary pathways.
Private & international schools
Lithuania has a small private and international-school sector, concentrated in Vilnius.
Curriculum & language of instruction
The curriculum covers Lithuanian language and literature, mathematics, the sciences, history, and foreign languages (English is widely taught).
Exams & qualifications
Students take the Matura (maturity examinations) at the end of secondary school, which certify completion and are used for university admission.
Higher education
Higher education is led by Vilnius University (founded 1579, the oldest in the Baltics and one of the oldest in Eastern Europe), Kaunas University of Technology, Vytautas Magnus University, and the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (a major medical university), among others. The system is Bologna-aligned and EU-recognized.
