Education in Hungary
Hungary, an EU member in Central Europe, runs a mostly public, Hungarian-language education system with near-universal literacy. Kindergarten is compulsory from age 3, students attend a long single-structure general school before choosing a secondary path, and university admission hinges on the érettségi (matriculation) exam. Structure & stages
The system is organized as:

Compulsory education & enrolment
Education is compulsory from age 3 to 16. Public education is free for Hungarian students, and the school year runs September to June. National competency tests are taken in grades 6 and 8.
Public schools
Most students attend free public schools. After the eight-year general school, students choose among academic, technical, and vocational secondary paths — a decision point that shapes their route to university or the workforce.
Private & international schools
Hungary has a private, church-run, and international-school sector, concentrated in Budapest, including IB and foreign-language schools.
Curriculum & language of instruction
The curriculum covers Hungarian language and literature, mathematics, foreign languages, the sciences, history, ethics/religious studies, the arts, and physical education. The gimnázium provides broad academic preparation for the érettségi.
Exams & qualifications
The key qualification is the érettségi (matriculation / school-leaving examination), taken at the end of upper secondary. It certifies completion and serves as the university entrance examination; universities may weight specific subjects for competitive programs.
Higher education
Higher education is Bologna-aligned and led by universities such as Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), the University of Szeged, the University of Debrecen, and the medical Semmelweis University in Budapest. State-funded (free) university places are available to Hungarian and many EU students by merit, while others pay tuition.
