Education in Guatemala

Guatemala, the most populous country in Central America, runs a Spanish-language education system with intercultural bilingual education in its many Mayan languages for Indigenous communities. Literacy is around 83%, with significant gaps between urban and rural, and Ladino and Indigenous, populations. The country is also a world-renowned destination for Spanish-language immersion.

How It's Organized

Structure & stages

The system is organized as:

Who Must Attend

Compulsory education & enrolment

Education is free and compulsory through primary and the ciclo básico, though completion is uneven, especially in rural and Indigenous areas. The school year runs roughly January to October.

State Schools

Public schools

Most students attend free public schools, which include intercultural bilingual education (EBI) programs serving Mayan-language communities. Access and quality vary widely across the country.

Private & International Schools

Private & international schools

Guatemala has a substantial private and religious school sector, concentrated in Guatemala City and larger towns, which educates a significant share of students.

What's Taught

Curriculum & language of instruction

The curriculum covers Spanish, mathematics, natural and social sciences, and (in bilingual schools) Mayan languages. The upper-secondary diversificado offers academic, teaching, and technical specializations.

Assessment

Exams & qualifications

Students complete the bachillerato (or a teaching/technical diploma) to finish secondary school. Universities set their own admission requirements and entrance tests.

Universities

Higher education

Higher education is anchored by the University of San Carlos of Guatemala (USAC) — the country's only public university, which is free and autonomous and, founded in 1676, one of the oldest in the Americas — alongside private universities such as Universidad del Valle, Rafael Landívar, and Francisco Marroquín.

International Students

Studying in Guatemala from abroad

Guatemala is a world-famous destination for Spanish-language immersion:

Additional Needs

Special education & support

Special-education provision is limited, delivered through a mix of government and NGO programs, and concentrated in urban areas.

Learning at Home

Homeschooling

Homeschooling is uncommon in Guatemala; education is school-based, with public, private, and bilingual options.

Paying for School

Costs & funding

Public education is free, including at USAC. Private schools and universities charge tuition. Spanish-immersion language study is paid but generally affordable. The currency is the Guatemalan Quetzal (GTQ).
