Education in The Gambia

The Gambia — the smallest country on mainland Africa and a former British colony — runs an English-language education system (with local languages such as Mandinka, Wolof, and Fula widely spoken), alongside a strong tradition of Islamic and Quranic (madrasa) schooling. Literacy is relatively low, and the government has worked to expand access, particularly for girls.

How It's Organized

Structure & stages

The system is organized as:

Who Must Attend

Compulsory education & enrolment

Basic education is the focus of compulsory schooling, and the government has expanded free access at the lower-basic level. The school year runs roughly September to July.

State Schools

Public schools

Most children attend public and grant-aided schools, with instruction in English, alongside madrasas that combine Islamic and general education. Access has grown, though completion — especially in rural areas — remains a challenge.

Private & International Schools

Private & international schools

The Gambia has a private and religious school sector, including Islamic and Christian schools, concentrated around the Greater Banjul area.

What's Taught

Curriculum & language of instruction

The curriculum covers English, mathematics, sciences, and social studies, taught in English, with Islamic and Arabic studies prominent in madrasa schooling.

Assessment

Exams & qualifications

Two key examinations mark the path: the GABECE (Gambia Basic Education Certificate Examination) at the end of upper basic, and the WASSCE (West African Senior School Certificate Examination), administered regionally by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), at the end of senior secondary — the basis for university entry.

Universities

Higher education

Higher education centers on the University of The Gambia (UTG), established in 1999, along with teacher-training and other colleges. Many students also pursue higher education abroad, including elsewhere in West Africa.

International Students

Studying in The Gambia from abroad

The Gambia is not a major destination for international students; capacity is modest, though its system is English-medium.

Additional Needs

Special education & support

Special-education provision is very limited, delivered mainly through NGO and faith-based programs.

Learning at Home

Homeschooling

Homeschooling is not an established route; education is school-based, alongside Quranic schooling.

Paying for School

Costs & funding

Lower basic education is free or low-cost, though families bear indirect costs. Private and religious schools charge fees. The currency is the Dalasi (GMD).
