Education in Armenia
Armenia, a post-Soviet country in the South Caucasus, runs a 12-year general-education system with Armenian as the main language of instruction and near-universal literacy (around 99.8%). Since transitioning from the Soviet model, Armenia has reformed its schools and aligned its universities with the European Bologna framework.
For international audiences, Armenia is notable for English-taught university programs — including the American University of Armenia and English-medium medical degrees — that attract students from abroad.

Public schools
Most Armenian students attend free public schools. The system inherited strong foundations from the Soviet era — particularly in mathematics and the sciences — and has been modernizing its curriculum and standards since independence.
Private & international schools
Armenia has a growing private-school sector in Yerevan and larger towns, including international and English/Russian-language schools serving diaspora-connected and internationally mobile families.
Curriculum & language of instruction
The curriculum covers Armenian language and literature, mathematics, the sciences, history, and foreign languages — with Russian and English commonly taught. Armenia's strong tradition in maths and sciences carries through from the Soviet-era system.
Exams & qualifications
Students complete a state final attestation at the end of secondary school. Admission to universities is through unified/standardized entrance examinations in relevant subjects, which determine placement into state-funded or fee-paying places.
Higher education
Armenia's flagship is Yerevan State University (founded 1919), the largest and oldest. The American University of Armenia (AUA) offers US-accredited, English-taught programs, and Yerevan State Medical University and other institutions provide English-medium medical degrees. Higher education is Bologna-aligned (Bachelor–Master–Doctorate).
Studying in Armenia from abroad
Armenia has become a growing destination for international students, particularly in medicine:
- English-taught programsThe American University of Armenia offers US-style English-language degrees; several universities offer English-medium medical (MBBS/MD) programs that attract students from India and elsewhere
- Recognition & costBologna alignment supports European recognition, and tuition/living costs are relatively affordable
- PracticalitiesInternational students obtain a student visa/residence permit; confirm program accreditation and licensing pathways directly
Special education & support
Armenia has been expanding inclusive education, moving toward integrating students with disabilities into mainstream schools with support services. Provision is strongest in Yerevan and continues to develop nationally.
Homeschooling
Homeschooling is uncommon in Armenia; education is overwhelmingly school-based, and families typically choose among public, private, or international schools.
Costs & funding
Public general education is free. Private and international schools charge tuition. At university, students may hold state-funded (free) places or pay tuition depending on their entrance-exam results and program; international programs charge fees. The currency is the Armenian Dram.
