A fast-growing, loosely governed space
Micro-credentials — short, focused credentials often shown as digital badges — certify a specific skill or competency. The space is growing fast and is not governed by a single accreditor. There is no “micro-credential accreditation” body the way there is for colleges; value comes from who issues it and what standards it meets.
What structure exists
- Open Badges (1EdTech)The technical standard for verifiable digital badges (from 1EdTech, formerly IMS Global) — it makes a badge portable and its metadata checkable, but it is a data standard, not a quality accreditation.
- Credential EngineA non-profit building the Credential Transparency Description Language and a registry to make credentials comparable and discoverable.
- Issuer reputationThe strongest signal — a badge from a respected university, employer, or professional body carries its issuer’s credibility.
- Institutional accreditationA micro-credential issued by an accredited college carries that institution’s accreditation for the credit it awards, if any.
Stackable credentials
Some micro-credentials are stackable — they accumulate toward a certificate or degree at the issuing (accredited) institution. Where that is the case, the stacked pathway inherits the institution’s accreditation. A standalone badge from an unknown issuer, by contrast, carries only that issuer’s reputation.

Frequently asked questions
- Are micro-credentials accredited? Usually not. There is no single accreditor for micro-credentials; their value comes from the issuer's credibility and the standards behind them rather than an accreditation stamp.
- What is the Open Badges standard? A technical standard (from 1EdTech, formerly IMS Global) for verifiable digital badges. It makes a badge portable and checkable, but it is a data standard, not a quality accreditation.
- Do university micro-credentials carry accreditation? A micro-credential from an accredited college carries that institution's accreditation for any credit it awards; a standalone badge from an unknown issuer carries only that issuer's reputation.
- What are stackable credentials? Micro-credentials that accumulate toward a certificate or degree at the issuing institution; where stacking is real, the pathway inherits the institution's accreditation.
- How do I judge a micro-credential's value? Ask who issued it, what earning it required (assessment vs. seat time), and whether it stacks toward something recognized. A verifiable badge from a credible issuer with a real assessment is most valuable.
- What is Credential Engine? A non-profit building tools and a registry to make credentials transparent and comparable, so learners and employers can understand what a credential means.
- Is a digital badge worth anything? It depends entirely on the issuer and rigor. A badge from a respected university or employer with a real assessment carries weight; a badge for watching videos does not.
- How do I verify a micro-credential? Check that the badge is verifiable (Open Badges), confirm the issuer's credibility, and, for credit-bearing ones, confirm the issuing institution's accreditation.
